The boy who didn’t believe

“My son, my son! Come quickly, I must show you something.”
The boy rushes into his father’s workplace with great excitement on his face.
“What is it, father? What do you want me to see?”
The father turns to the boy and hands him an almost indescribable object, beautiful and sparkling. It is shiny and infinitely deep. Gigantic, yet fitting in the palm of his hand.
The boy’s eyes light up in awe. His hands tremble as they reach out to touch the strange object.
“May I play with it, father? Please, may I?”
The father smiles to his energetic little boy and carefully passes the object onto his child. Then his face turns very serious. Boy, you may play with it but under these conditions…
The child nods in agreement whenever his father explains to him a condition. I’ll do it!, he says enthusiastically, then runs off to play with the object in the backyard.

Some hours pass, then the boy returns to his father’s workplace. Father… he asks, Where did you get the beautiful, sparkling object from?
The father turns to his son once again, lifts him up and sits him on his lap. Well son, I made it myself.
Nah-uh!, the boy replies. I don’t believe you!
You don’t believe me, my son? Would I ever lie to you?
There is just no way you could do it!
The father’s face is struck with sadness. Why would I not be able to do it? Am I not smart and strong enough to make something like that?
The boy looks the father in the eyes, squints, then mocks him and says Well then, how long did you take to make it?
Oh son…, father replies, I finished it just this morning, after having worked on it for 6 days. Since it was done I thought I’d take a break from working and show it to you so you could play with it.
Six days??? Ha, no way. Something as complex as THAT must have taken like millions of years!
The father puts down his son and walks to his desk to grab something.
What’s this? The son asks.
This is a report on the creation of the object. I had someone write it down, so people would know I made it, even though it should be obvious that I did. No one but me can do this.
Bah. Someone wrote that? How can I trust that? How can I trust what is written by some human? Why don’t you just tell me where you REALLY got it?.
The father puts away the report and sighs. I’m telling you the truth, son. I’m telling you the truth.
The son rubs his nose and shrugs his shoulders. Then he leaves his father to play outside again.

Hours pass again. It is awfully quiet outside when the father decides to take a look to see what is going on.
The sun is already setting and it is getting darker outside. When the father reaches the backyard, all he can see is glowing pieces in the grass. When he approaches the center of the yard it becomes apparent to him that his beautiful creation was broken and shattered.
Now it is but a shell of what it used to be. No longer beautiful, no longer grand, no longer deep and sparkling.
He bends down to pick up the pieces when he discovers a note buried underneath. The father picks up the note and reads it.

Dear father,

I am running away. I am going to look for where you really got the object you say you’ve made. When I find it, I’m going to show everyone that you are a liar. Then no one will ever come to you again!

The father weeps and returns to his house where he is met by his oldest son.
What’s the matter father? Where is my brother?
The father hands over the note that he found earlier to his older son, who then reads it with tears in his eyes. He turns to his father and looks him in the eyes, saying

I will find him, and I will bring him back to us. Even if it kills me…

Common misconceptions and abuse of Bible texts: ‘Thou shall not judge!’

This is a series on common misconceptions on the Bible and abuse of some of its texts that I encounter on a regular basis. In each entry to the series I address one of such misconceptions and answer to them, correcting them.
Feel free to use these articles and build on them.

‘Thou shall not judge!’ is not a commandment

People typically yell this when confronted on certain questionably behavior they may be guilty of. When the person doing the confronting is a Christian, he or she is likely to get this thrown at them.
This is often used to make the Christian crawl back, because surely a Christian knows he should not judge! In a way, the Christian is now made to feel guilty even though he or she could be totally right to confront the first person.

So can a Christian never confront a person for their behaviour because that would be judging?
